Avallon, a little-known town at the gateway to the Morvan
A rocky promontory at the foot of which flows the Cousin in a narrow valley that naturally protects the town to the south. Its slopes have been shaped into gardens, the remains of which can still be appreciated. On the east side are the ramparts and defensive towers, and in the heart of the town you can still make out the castle walls, the old houses and the town's role as a stopover on the Roman road between Autun and Auxerre.
A stopover for pilgrims on their way to Vézelay, Avallon is a little-known town with everything to surprise you.
