This beautiful first day allows you to discover the Canal du Nivernais, which links the Loire and Yonne rivers. You will arrive in Chatillon-en-Bazois, where you will stay in a charming bed and breakfast.
Day 3 Châtillon-en-Bazois - Clamecy 63 km
On the towpath, you will pass through a variety of landscapes along the Canal du Nivernais before arriving in Clamecy, a picturesque little town with superb timber-framed houses.
Day 4 Clamecy - Auxerre 64 km
Continue along the banks of the Canal du Nivernais and follow the route of the "Bois de Flottage": in the Middle Ages, the Morvan forest produced wood for the inhabitants of Paris. This wood was floated to the capital. You'll enjoy this charming, multi-faceted itinerary, passing through the Rochers du Saussois, a major climbing spot, and then Mailly-le-Château. At the Pisciculture De Crisenon, you can learn about trout farming and buy local produce. You'll discover charming little villages such as Cravant, a medieval market town. Don't miss a diversion to the Caves de Bailly for a visit to the centre of the earth and a tasting of Crémant de Bourgogne before getting back on the bikes and heading for Auxerre. Make the most of this magnificent town, with its rich historic quarter listed as a "protected site". Auxerre, a Town of Art and History, has preserved an exceptional architectural heritage down the ages: St Etienne's Cathedral, a model of Gothic elegance, and St Germain's Abbey.
