LUCENAY-LES-AIX
Lucenay-les-Aix, a pretty rural village, is situated at the southern tip of the Nièvre department and borders 5 villages in the Allier department. The rivers Ozon, Acolin and Abron are the main watercourses running through the village.
Lucenay-les-Aix once had three churches, those of Saint-Gervais and Saint-Genest, which disappeared during the Revolution. All that remains is that of Saint-Romain, which you can visit in the village.
In the 19th century, five mills produced flour.
Since 1964, a pharmaceutical ampoule factory has been based in the commune.
The French poet Théodore de Banville lived in Lucenay-les-Aix for many years, and the main street bears his name.
Château d'Auzon (private) is a property that has been restored several times since the 17th century. In 1849, a vast agricultural and landscaped park was designed by the Comte de CHOULOT and planted with species that were rare at the time. The estate is currently being protected, including for biodiversity, and restored so that it can be opened to a wider public than the current annual garden events in June and the European Heritage Days in September.
A magnificent wash-house and picnic area with games at the end of the shopping street offer a peaceful place to stop off.
A signposted walk starting from the bus shelter at Les Mouroux takes in the countryside around Lucenay-les-Aix. During the summer months, blackberries can be sampled along the way... and you're in for a treat!
