Montreal, a city at the heart of the crusades
A walk in the footsteps of a family at the heart of the Crusades.
A prosperous town along the Champagne road on the borders of the Duchy of Burgundy and the County of Champagne, the village has preserved its successive walls and the three parts of its settlement: the lower town, the upper town and the castle walls, of which only the collegiate church remains, one of the rare examples of early Gothic architecture admired by Eugène Viollet le Duc.
For centuries, it was the seat of the Anséric family, the powerful lords of Montréal, whose last lord's decline was on a par with the glory of his ancestors, who went on crusade with the Dukes of Burgundy and the Kings of France.
A stroll steeped in its glorious medieval past, where every stone is an invitation to tell you stories and anecdotes. It's an encounter full of exchanges and questions galore, if you feel like it.
Take a stroll from the gateway below to the collegiate church at the top of the hill, in the magical setting of narrow streets and ancient medieval houses.
